What's happening News A refreshed APPG for Life Sciences Published: 17 October 2024 For a number of years, the AMRC has provided the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Medical Research alongside other organisations including some of our member charities. However, due to recent rule changes and to better reflect the breadth of the sector, we’ve decided to partner with charities, trade associations and an academy to support a refreshed APPG for Life Sciences. This will form a key pillar of our post-election advocacy activities. The group will be chaired by Rt Hon Kit Malthouse MP (Conservative) with other members joining from across the House of Commons and Lords. Its steering group will be coordinated by the AMRC and the BioIndustry Association, alongside colleagues from Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation, Versus Arthritis, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and the British In Vitro Diagnostics Association. Following its first meeting in Parliament on Tuesday, the new group of MPs and peers wrote to the Chancellor urging her to protect and promote the UK’s world-leading life sciences sector in the government's first Budget. More broadly, the APPG’s mission will be raising awareness of how life sciences benefits the health and wealth of the nation, largely through a programme of topical events for parliamentarians as well as a regular newsletter.
