AMRC has today launched a new briefing on embedding research in the NHS.

The NHS has all the elements to be a powerhouse for clinical research: world-leading expertise, a diverse population, comprehensive care, and investment from public, private and charity sectors.

But this potential is not being realised and patients are missing out. In his recent review, Lord Darzi found that research, in a health service under extreme pressure, has fallen into the "important but not urgent" category.

This has to change. This briefing outlines why research and innovation must be a central part of the solution in the 10-year health plan, and how the Government can ensure that research is embedded effectively in the NHS by prioritising three areas:

  1. supporting a thriving clinical research workforce
  2. maximising opportunities for everyone to take part in research
  3. making it easy to deliver research throughout the NHS.

Embedding research in the NHS will transform prevention and early detection, reduce health inequalities and offer a lifeline to patients. It will improve productivity in the Health Service and attract life sciences companies, driving growth.

The briefing is the fifth in our ‘Manifesto in Focus’ series, which delves deeper into some of the topics covered in our manifesto, including recruitment to clinical research, unlocking health data for research and care, the Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF) and charity investment in infrastructure.
